Year in Fandom Meme 2021

Apparently the end of the year is kicking me into actually posting some things for once. I have a feeling half the answers to these questions are going to be the same, but hey ho.

1. Your main fandom of the year?

Guardian! Aka the little show that could, and by could I mean sweep right into my heart and brain and make itself comfortable there.

2. Your favorite film watched this year?

... I barely ever watch films, so this was a somewhat hard question to answer. If re-watches count, it's The Lord of the Rings trilogy, as usual.

3. Your favorite book read this year?

Also hard, for the opposite reason. I read a lot of books 😅

I enjoyed my recent read of Ryka Aoki's Light from Uncommon Stars a lot, particularly for the love of music that shone through the entire book, so I'll pick that one.

4. Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?

The Guardian soundtrack, hands down. I listened to it So Many Times. It's great writing music and great feeling emotional about things yet again music.

5. Your favorite TV show of the year?

Guardian. No surprise there XD With all its flaws, it still managed to grab me so completely I can't choose anything else.

6. Your favorite DW community of the year?

[profile] sid_gardian. I've particularly enjoyed the regular scene discussions over there.

7. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?

Guardian again. (This is why I thought this might get repetitive...)

8. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?

All the angst and discourse in the MDZS/Untamed fandom. I was never directly involved in anything, but it put me off enough that I went looking for something else to hyperfocus on - cue Guardian XD

9. Your fandom boyfriend of the year?

Shen Wei! He makes me go very 🥺 and 😍 and 😭. Part of it is the way Zhu Yilong looks and acts in the role, but frankly, if someone had tried to design a character entirely to my tastes, ticking every characteristics box that I like, it'd pretty much be Shen Wei, so the end result was more or less inevitable.

10. Your fandom girlfriend of the year?

Alanna the Lioness from Tamora Pierce's Tortall book series. Not because I wrote a lot of fic about her (I didn't), but because I reread a lot of Tortall fic earlier in the summer and I just love her. A mix of nostalgia and enduring appeal. I mean, lady knights, right?

11. Your biggest squee moment of the year?

All the treats I got for [community profile] guardian_wishlist. That was absolutely lovely and I felt very blessed.

12. The most missed of your old fandoms?

I'm pretty happy where I am, but I'll say Star Wars, mostly because canon managed to alienate me pretty thoroughly, which soured enjoyment of even the bits I like and I hate it when that happens.

13. The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?

... Nothing comes to mind? I don't really aim to get into a fandom, it just sort of happens.

14. Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?

Anything Zhu Yilong does, more or less 😂

Guardian is the first thing that made me want to write fic. What an incredible little show that could!

Yes! See also: me, essentially an (English-language) book person, also somehow completely long-term swept up in this Chinese-language live-action drama, wtf. Some of it is Zhu Yilong, bless him, but it also just managed to hit all the right notes for me somehow in storytelling, actual and potential. And the people (present company very much included) are lovely!

Guardian again

Lolol. I am two years past discovering Guardian, but those questions never get any easier to answer. (But they are fun to think about.)
